My Take:
Everything works well for this film and for my enjoyment. The awkwardness and fresh look of the lead character (Marco Hofschneider) is the highlight of his appeal. Though he may have been considered a traitor in terms of a Jew, at times, you could feel the intensity of his distress, loneliness and pain, which made the drama and insight-fullness of the plot intriguing and well received. Parts of the film dragged on somewhat and could have been omitted. Things that stood out most are the way events surrounding the holocaust were depicted; the point-blank murdering of Jews, the concentration camps and training of the soldiers. They were all incorporated as in any holocaust film but these events were not the emotional points or emotional highlights of the film. The emotions came from the journey and transformation of Solomon as a Jew to German solider.
In all, it is a good film that depicts what happens when one does what they must to survive the perilous times they are presented with.
